{"id":1447,"date":"2014-06-25T15:07:15","date_gmt":"2014-06-25T15:07:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibex.tech\/resources\/?p=1447"},"modified":"2026-06-17T09:19:32","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T08:19:32","slug":"inductors-general","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ibex.tech\/resources\/geek-area\/electronics\/inductors\/inductors-general","title":{"rendered":".Inductors General"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>\nInductance<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<p>\nInductance &ldquo;rolls off&rdquo; with increasing current and the way this happens depends on the material:\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\nIron powder, molybdenum permalloy powder (MPP), sendust and amorphous powder that employ a distributed air gap\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 80px;\">\nInductance roll off starts at very low current levels and continues in an almost linear manner as the current is increased.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 80px;\">\nThe peak current could be specified at anything up to a 50% roll off with operation beyond this being&nbsp;possible provided the inductor is not overheated.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\nFerrite material\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 80px;\">\nThe inductance falls sharply at the point where the whole core becomes saturated. Before this point is reached, the inductance remains almost constant.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 80px;\">\nThe peak current would normally be specified for a 10% to 30% reduction in inductance from the open circuit value. Operation at higher current levels are not recommended, as the inductance would quickly fall to a low level.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nLook at datasheet roll off curves when selecting inductors.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<h4>\nCurrent Rating<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<p>\nInductors are normally specified with two current ratings\n<\/p>\n<p>\nContinuous (Irms)\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\nNormally specified as the dc current which produces an inductor temperature rise of 40&deg;C (allows&nbsp;for an ambient temperature of 85&ordm;C and therefore a surface temperature of 125&ordm;C).\n<\/p>\n<p>\nPeak (Isat)\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\nThe peak current which produces a specific roll off in inductance,&nbsp;specified as a percentage reduction from the open circuit value and can vary from 5% to 50%.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThese current ratings are a guide to the inductor performance and the actual maximum operating current will depend on the application.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Inductance Inductance &ldquo;rolls off&rdquo; with increasing current and the way this happens depends on the material: Iron powder, molybdenum permalloy powder (MPP), sendust and amorphous powder that employ a distributed air gap Inductance roll off starts at very low current levels and continues in an almost linear manner as the current is increased.
