The basic key checks for using a Mosfet in a circuit design:
Drain-source voltage
Absolute max rating is well above the max voltage being switched.
Allow for maximum voltage peeks and pulses that may be present.
Gate-source voltage
The voltage you will apply to the gate is within this absolute max rating.
Drain current (continuous and pulsed)
The max current ever passed is within this absolute max rating
Resistance (Rds)
A mosfet is a resistor when on!!!!
A 0.5ohm Rds means if you pass 2A through it, it will cause a voltage drop of 1V and produce 2W of heat!!!!
V= I x R. Voltage across mosfet = Amps x Rds.
Then its W = V x I. Watts of heat emitted = Voltage drop x Amps.
It doesn’t matter what voltage the mosfet is switching, the voltage drop across it, and therefore the heat it produces, is solely a function of its Rds.
If it will get too hot choose a device with a lower Rds.
Gate-Source leakage current
Ensure it won’t bring the gate voltage out of gate threshold voltage spec if using very high pull resistance values
